We’ve all been there before. Middle of the summer. Sweltering heat...but it’s so cool inside! If we can just stay inside, we’ll be comfortable! The hum of the air conditioner working its way through the house is unbelievably comforting, and then....SILENCE! What’s happened to our serene, controlled environment?! Then it hits you...the air conditioner stopped working! Immediately your mind goes into 'DEFCON 5', imagining having to take a second mortgage out on your home to repair your once reliable AC.
Flash forward to reality. HVAC repairs can sometimes be costly, but have really come down in price over the years with more consumer friendly costs. Even though HVAC repairs could be in your future, there are a few basic “checks” you can do yourself before calling your HVAC expert.
- Check your controls – Sometimes the solution can be so simple it’s staring us right in the face. Did someone set your AC on timer and jumble up when it was supposed to go on and o? Did someone accidentally step on the remote control? Did they accidentally turn it o altogether? Is there an error on the control panel? Take a few moments to see if the controls are in order. Pull out your manual, do a Google search, or even call your manufacturer to see if you can get some basic information on control panel troubleshooting.
- Check your filters – When was the last time they were cleaned? If you’re worried about costly HVAC repairs, then you should definitely be taking part in economical HVAC maintenance! Air conditioners struggle against dirty and clogged filters, and sometimes something as simple as cleaning or replacing your filters can be the magic bullet you’re looking for.
- Check your compressor – Do some basic reconnaissance work. Check your compressor for any wear and tear. Do you see ice buildup? Is it making a strange noise? If so, odds are, you’ll have to call in your HVAC expert.
- Reset – That’s right. Air conditioners are often like computers. Breathe and reboot. You can do this by going to the meter box and turning it o. Sometimes your compressor will have an 'isolator' switch that you can turn o as well. If so, turn o box switches, wait a few moments, and then turn them back on.
